Attention: From the Forest Area School District Special Education Department
The Forest Area School District hereby notifies parents and guardian of children with disabilities age 3-21 of the availability of Special Education Services, at no cost to parents, to meet these children’s unique educational needs.
Every school within the Forest Area School District has a screening and evaluation process to identify students who may require Special Education Services. If parents or guardians think that their child might need Special Education Services, they can refer their child by contacting the principal of the school that the child attends, or the school district Administration Office. Screenings and evaluations occur throughout the year and also during the beginning of Kindergarten.
Forest County residents whose children do not attend public school should contact the Special Education Department of the Forest Area School District regarding evaluation procedures and support services for eligible students in those settings.
The Forest Area School District offers a full continuum of services for children with special needs. Programs and services available include:
Early Intervention |
For children ages 3 to 5 with special needs likely to interfere with learning and development. |
Learning Support |
For students whose primary identified need is academic learning. |
Emotional Support |
For students whose primary identified need is for emotional support. |
Sensory Support |
For students who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Blind, or Visually Impaired. |
Autistic Support |
For students with Autism, Asperger’s, or Pervasive Developmental Disorders. |
Life Skills Support |
For exceptional students focusing primarily on the needs of students for independent living. |
Speech and Language Support |
For students who are speech and language impaired. |
Physical Support |
For students with Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy and other physical disorders. |
Parents are advised that in Pennsylvania, opportunities for students who are mentally Gifted are available through the Forest Area School District. Chapter 16 of the Pennsylvania School Code governs parental rights to these programs. If parents feel that their child may be gifted, they should contact the principal of the school that their child attend to initiate the evaluation process.
Parents are also advised that Chapter 15 of the Pennsylvania School Code protects children with disabilities who do not require Special Education. The Forest Area School District will provide to each “protected handicapped student” without discrimination or cost to the student or family, those related aids, services and accommodations which are needed to provide equal opportunity to participate in and benefit from the school program and extracurricular activities to the maximum extend appropriate to the student’s abilities. Parents should contact the principal of their child’s school for more information. Notice is given to parents and guardian of the confidentiality requirements school districts and Intermediate Units must follow in the evaluation and programming of children who may require special education services. Records generated by this process as well as records sought from non-school agencies are confidential and protected by both Federal and State Legislation. Information about confidentiality will be provided to parents or guardians at the time of referral. Information to/from outside sources cannot be requested/released without parents written consent. All records are kept under lock and are mechanically destroyed when they no long have educational relevance.
