COMPUTER AND INTERNET
USE POLICIES
Computer Use Policy | Internet Use Policy

COMPUTER USE POLICY

Forest Area School District ’s networks and computing resources exist to support the instructional and administrative needs of the district. The District recognizes that the networks and computing resources are a critical resource. This policy is intended to inform the educational community about the manner in which these resources are administered so they will better understand what is expected of them in helping to ensure that these resources provide the best possible service. Computer resources are used to enhance the educational program.

Students using the district’s network(s) and/or computing resources may not:

  • Introduce any information, including applications or documents, on any district network or computing resource without regard to the following:
    • Students must have teacher or staff approval.
    • Teacher/staff will not give permission nor perform the operation without first processing the information through an anti-viral check.
    • Teachers/staff will not load any applications on a network machine without first obtaining approval from the network administrator.
  • Connect any device to, or disconnect any device from, a network or computing resource ~ including all peripheral devices, LAN, or WAN.
  • Alter, in any way, a network device, a device or peripheral name or address, file or folder names, or network zones.
  • Copy applications, folders, and/or files unless directly related to curriculum projects/activities ~ and with teacher or staff approval.
  • Distribute nor alter network or computer resource passwords. Passwords are for the regular use of the individual to whom they are assigned and are not to be shared under any circumstances. No one is to use a computer that is “logged in” under someone else’s name.
  • Use any network or computing resource to gain unauthorized access to other network zones, other networks or other computing resources.
  • Use any network resources, including hardware, peripherals, and software for personal entertainment and/or private activities without prior approval from a teacher or staff member.

Any infractions regarding this policy or any other deliberate and/or negligent, abuse of the district’s networks or computer resources will result in disciplinary action. In addition to actions by the district, serious violations may also be subject to criminal prosecution under Pennsylvania law (18 Pa. C.S.A. Sec. 3933, Unlawful use of computer). The complete computer use policy is available online and at each building library or office.

INTERNET USE POLICY

The Internet is an electronic communications network which provides vast, diverse and unique resources. Our goal in providing this service to teachers, staff and students, is to promote educational excellence in the Forest Area School District by facilitating resource sharing, innovation and communication.

In the schools, students’ access to, and use of, the Internet will be available only through a teacher/staff account and, as such, should be under teacher direction and monitored as any other classroom activity. Direct supervision is required. The school district, however, cannot prevent the possibility that some users may access materials that are not consistent with the educational mission, goals, and policies of the district.

Student’s using the district’s Internet access account may not:

  • Copy/download application, folders, and/or files unless directly related to curriculum projects/activities ~ and with teacher or staff approval.
  • Use the Internet to gain access to inappropriate material, or material deemed to be vulgar or obscene.
  • Use the Internet for personal entertainment and/or private activities without prior approval from a teacher or staff member.

Internet access is coordinated through a complex association of government agencies and regional network.

The operation of the Internet relies heavily on the proper conduct of the users, who must adhere to strict guidelines. Internet access is a privilege, not a right. If a district user violates this policy, his/her account will be terminated and future access denied. Some violations may also constitute a criminal offense and may result in legal action. The complete computer use policy is available online and at each building library or office.
