GIFTED PROGRAM

A program for gifted students is provided in grades K - 6. Students are identified for this program through a multidisciplinary evaluation. Speed reading, creative writing, computer activities, researching and other activities are used to challenge and motivate the gifted student. Each gifted student is expected to excel above and beyond the basic educational program. An Individual Education Program (IEP) is written for each gifted student.

LEARNING SUPPORT

Learning support is a classroom that serves students in grades K - 6. Students are identified for this program through a multidisciplinary evaluation. This program is designed to meet the needs of students who experience learning difficulties that cannot be adequately met in the regular classroom. Each student is provided with an Individual Education Program that meets his/her educational and emotional needs. Students are integrated into the regular developmental classrooms only at a level where he/she can function successfully.

ESL Program

English as a Second Language program is available to any student whose primary language is not English. Every student registered into the Forest Area School District must have a home language survey completed. If indicated that the student primary language is not English, an English Language proficiency test will be given by a certified ESL teacher. The need for ESL educational program will be determined through this testing.

PEER MEDIATION

What is mediation? Mediation is a communication process in which the people with the problem work together with the assistance of a neutral third party, cooperating to resolve their conflict peaceably.

The mediator is a neutral third party. When students serve as mediators to assist other students, they are called peer mediators.

Mediation is an approach to resolve conflict in which the disputants, those people who disagree, have a chance to sit face-to-face and talk, uninterrupted, so each point of view is heard. After the problem is identified, the disputants create options for mutual gain and choose a win-win solution. They then finalize an agreement to behave in some way from that point forward.

SPEECH, HEARING, VISION THERAPY

Speech, hearing, and vision therapy is provided for students who are diagnosed through a multidisciplinary team as needing those services. These programs are operated by certified employees of the Riverview Intermediate Unit.
